The Verdon Gorge (in French: Gorges du Verdon or Grand canyon du Verdon), in south-eastern France (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), is a river canyon that is considered by many to be Europe's most beautiful. It is the world's second largest gorge, at about 25 kilometers in length and more than 300 metres deep. It was formed by the Verdon River, which is named after its startling turquoise-green colour, one of the canyon's most distinguishing characteristics. The most impressive part lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Ste-Marie, where the river has cut a ravine more than 300 metres down through the limestone mass. At the end of the canyon, the Verdon river flows into the artificial lake of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon (in French: Lac de Sainte-Croix).

This is place magic. A river flows out of the mountain, and the water is so clear that you can spot every little living organism at its bottom.

One of the best restaurants in Aix-en-Provence, in the most amazing and original setting.

This popular trattoria is in an 18th-century town house a few steps from place Rotonde. Regulars include Emanuel Ungaro and many film and fashion types, who mingle with old-time "Aixers." Despite its grandeur, the ambience is unpretentious, even jovial. Crusty bread and small pots of aromatic purées (anchovy and basil) arrive at your table as you sit down. A simple wine, such as Côtes-du-Rhône, goes nicely with the hearty Mediterranean fare. Examples of dishes are pasta Romano flavored with calves' liver, flap mushrooms, and tomato sauce; ravioli with goat cheese; osso buco; a selection of légumes farcies (vegetables such as eggplant and zucchini stuffed with minced meat and herbs); and at least half a dozen kinds of fresh fish.

The best bouillabaisse in the world, right on the sea.
